This in response to a meme picture that stated “Doesn’t the B in LGBT imply that there are only two genders?”
“L”= Lesbian – A female that is attracted to other females
“G”= Gay – A male that is attracted to other males
“B”= Bi¹ – A female or male that is attracted to both females and males
“T”= Transgender² – A female or male that feels they were born the wrong gender. They can be attracted to either their original or chosen gender.
So technically,³ there aren’t even two full genders, some people are born with ambiguous genders or born with both sets of genitalia, these people self identify as Intersex.
Any combination of these genders can be attracted to any other combination of these genders. They can also choose to be Asexual, or interested in friendship but never really desire a sexual partner.
Other variants may have a “U” for “unsure”; a “C” for “curious”; another “T” for “transvestite”; a “TS”, or “2” for “two-spirit” persons; or an “SA” for “straight allies”. However, the inclusion of straight allies in the LGBT acronym has proven controversial as many straight allies have been accused of using LGBT advocacy to gain popularity and status in recent years, and various LGBT activists have criticized the hetero-normative worldview of certain straight allies. Some may also add a “P” for “poly-amorous”, an “H” for “HIV-affected”, or an “O” for “other”. Furthermore, the initialism LGBTIH has seen use in India to encompass the hijra third gender identity and the related subculture.
All of these are valid life paths. Why would you attempt to make fun of or invalidate someone else’s lifestyle? Would you make fun of a cripple because they are differently abled? Would you make fun of a burn victim because their skin looks different than yours? This post/picture, which I’m sure was meant to be a quick joke, may end up hurting someone close to you and you might never know because they won’t be comfortable confiding in you who they truly are. That is sad.
🌈💞Be a beacon of light for those who need it, there is already too much darkness in this world.
EDITS: Corrections from myself or friends
1. Bi simply refers to someone attracted to both *sexes.*
Bisexuality is romantic attraction, sexual attraction, or sexual behavior toward both males and females, or romantic or sexual attraction to people of any sex or gender identity; this latter aspect is sometimes alternatively termed pansexuality.
2. [It should be] transgender Not transgendered. The latter implies something happened to cause someone to become transgender. This is far from the truth.
Transgender people are people who have a gender identity or gender expression that differs from their assigned sex.
3. There are not two full genders, nor does the acronym imply such a thing.
Gender is the range of characteristics pertaining to, and differentiating between, masculinity and femininity. Depending on the context, these characteristics may include biological sex (i.e. the state of being male, female or an intersex variation which may complicate sex assignment), sex-based social structures (including gender roles and other social roles), or gender identity.
